Hocking Hills Region Announces Second Annual Migratory Weekend

by www.1800Hocking.com

Logan, OH  USA – Visitors to southeast Ohio’s dazzling Hocking Hills region will have an even easier time discovering the area’s incredible rare and unique bird population.  The Hocking Valley Birding Trail now helps travelers find the best locations for birding and offers tips for spotting the most unique bird species that visit or live in the Hocking Hills.  Visitors can also join members of the birding trail for International Migratory Bird Weekend, May 11-13, 2007.  Area naturalists and bird lovers will celebrate the return of migratory birds with a variety of programs, hikes and special events.

Bird enthusiasts, state, federal and local agencies and professional biologists, naturalists and birders have come together to help visitors discover the very best places to spot our feathered friends and promote wise birding and conservation via the birding trail and its website, www.birdhocking.com.

Because of the region’s thousands of acres of unbroken forest and isolation from the noise, lights and pollution of major cities, the Hocking Hills area is often a stopover for more exotic species, such as those that frequent rainforests and tropical locals.  The bald eagle, red-shouldered hawk, several species of warblers, the yellow-bellied sapsucker and the red-headed woodpecker are favorites that are often spotted in the area.

FEED HUMMINGBIRDS BY HAND In addition, from June to September, visitors will once again have the opportunity for a one-of-a-kind birding experience as they hand feed hummingbirds at Lake Hope State Park. This exceptional nature program is offered beginning mid June and ending Saturday, September 1, 2007.   While donations are welcome, there is no charge for this unique experience and reservations are not required.  The hour-long program starts at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays and 7:00 p.m. on Fridays. Guests are first shown a video and a display of different hummingbird species found in Ohio before learning the best techniques for standing still and luring the illusive ruby-throated hummingbirds to a hand-held feeder.

Beyond the many unique natural attractions, the Hocking Hills offers wide variety of accommodations, from camping and cabins to hotels and country inns.  In addition to numerous hiking trails, parks and forests, the Hocking Hills area offers unique gift and antique shops, canoeing, horseback riding, golf and more.  Complete consumer information on hummingbird events, festivals, accommodations and the many sites in the Hocking Hills region is available online at www.1800HOCKING.com  or toll-free at 1-800-HOCKING.
